Brave Old World?

“When logic and proportionHave fallen sloppy deadAnd the White Knight is talking backwardsAnd the Red Queen’s off with her head” Victor David Hanson’s Take Now, as we begin 2023 in earnest, it is high time to reflect upon the path forward and end game for so many nations actively pursuing DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies and legislation.  Will the West succumb to the logical extensions of such DEI policies present as Mr. Hanson suggests will happen in the U.S.?   “Remember what the dormouse saidFeed your headFeed your head”      Continue reading Brave Old World?

Thrilling to Trilling

Lionel Trilling’s Warning–Lee Siegel This article illuminates the deeper roots of what is happening in Western Culture, particularly the U.S., generally where both good and bad things begin.  We seek nourishment in the “abstract pieties” referenced in the article.  But we do not want to know how our breakfast sausage is made.  And here we  are! This article singles out the smallness of liberalism, but the critique, as withering and enjoyable as it is to me, could be applied to anyone peddling abstract pieties, including conservatives. We are human, all too human, and whoever is on top, will be there … Continue reading Thrilling to Trilling

Berlin Philharmonic and Organization

A Sunday morning with thoughts wandering…   Any colleagues with whom I have worked at several sites over the past 20 years will probably recollect seeing me at my desk working with some sort of headphones.  From all-covering to the latest AirPods, I have run through several, often abusing them by twisting the often hair-thin wiring to the point of shorting and the silence of no return. Music is a mainstay of my life, and has taught me much, although I can scarcely read a note.  While at work, listening helps me concentrate on thorny issues, often inspiring beyond a … Continue reading Berlin Philharmonic and Organization

“Your data keeps lifting me Haier and Haier”

With an apologetic nod to Jackie Wilson, whose song and adjusted lyrics above gave me so much enjoyment in high school, I present links to two articles “reporting” on what FBI Director Christopher Wray said this week about foreign agents and cyber attacks.  Wray was speaking at the Aspen Security Conference.  Incidentally, the byline date for both articles is July 19, 2018. The first from HuffPost: A Huff and a Puff! The second, comes from the Business Insider Australia: Aussie Bizz If you need an Etch-A-Sketch to draw your conclusion about the point, I am afraid you missed it. When Bad Science is Good Politics

When I was in Junior High School in the U.S. and 12 years old, our science teacher had us memorize the steps taken in the scientific method. Not being able to recall those steps exactly, since the memorization effort has not performed well over time, I found the updated version above that generally fits all scientific endeavours from lab science (biology, medicine, physics, psychology) and controlled conditions, to earth science and astronomy.  In fact, it has a multiplicity of uses as I will try to establish later. As noted, this list can be used for just about any type of … Continue reading When Bad Science is Good Politics

Johannistag

In the Catholic calendar, June 24th is the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist. The opera composer Richard Wagner builds Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg around the day before, June 23rd, as well as the actual feast day.  Praise to St. John In thinking about that day, and the baptism of Jesus, I came across a photo of the supposed location on the Jordan River of the actual baptismal act, which almost immediately (it is Sunday after all) lead me to recount how I had been there myself.  I had even taken photos of the site as part of a project I was … Continue reading Johannistag

No Stinkin’ Badges

Just An Oversight? If you need a break from the front page of your favorite daily, try turning to another page.  I tried that today, and this is what I found.  Remarkable as this account is, and troubling at the same time, I think I may return to the front page. I tried to discern just how such a thing could happen.  Is it a matter of compliance?  No, I easily found the OSSE website where you can easily get or renew your credential.  Easy as 1, 2, 3! .  Then I tried to figure out just what else might … Continue reading No Stinkin’ Badges
