Fiction: Born on a tiny farm, I had to struggle 25 miles through rolling hills to get to school each day. In winter, accumulating snow added to the challenge (get my drift?), and in the spring cloud to ground lightning struck early and often so I avoided all trees along the way to and from home.
I guess I will stop here, as the fiction sounds so much less interesting than the facts of my life that I cannot bear to go on. So I won’t.
Fact: Born in Stockton, California and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I grew up experiencing and sometimes enjoying the 60’s. I began my career as an elementary classroom teacher in my hometown of Hayward, California. While retaining my credential, I entered the business world and have worked primarily in financial services, including work in international and domestic consulting and, teaching. These career experiences have taken me from California to North Carolina, Kentucky to Iraq and Egypt, and throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
I worked with the Federal Government of Nigeria to successfully analyze and resolve outstanding Power Sector labor issues—including accrued pension payments–which had been key obstacles to privatization of the power industry since 2005. Prior to Nigeria, I worked in Rwanda and Southern Sudan on implementing key change management concepts to strategy, regulations, training and, supervision in the pension discipline. In Rwanda, I drafted pension regulations and conducted the first ever audit of the Rwandan Social Security Fund by the Central Bank of Rwanda, its regulator.
Prior to these engagements, as Business Advisor/Manager in BearingPoint’s Emerging Markets, I worked in Iraq on regulations drafting, capacity building and change management efforts specific to the government-sponsored pension systems.
I also have deep experience in senior management and product development within the private sector. Prior to BearingPoint, I worked in banks, a brokerage, and a mutual fund company, deeply involved in all aspects of benefits operations. I was a retirement administrator and an employee benefits trust officer for a large West Coast Bank, moving over to The Charles Schwab Trust Company to run their employee benefits trust section. While at Franklin Resources, I was part of the senior management team and successfully built and managed a daily valuation defined contribution business.
Consulting: I am available for consulting engagements here or internationally. I can assist public and private entities with their employee benefit programs, training, capacity building, and other subjects related to financial services or middle-/back-office operations.
