Lionel Trilling’s Warning–Lee Siegel

This article illuminates the deeper roots of what is happening in Western Culture, particularly the U.S., generally where both good and bad things begin. 

We seek nourishment in the “abstract pieties” referenced in the article.  But we do not want to know how our breakfast sausage is made.  And here we  are!

This article singles out the smallness of liberalism, but the critique, as withering and enjoyable as it is to me, could be applied to anyone peddling abstract pieties, including conservatives.
