Just when I thought I had read my fill of underwater life articles, here comes another with a racy title. This headline almost rivals the ones on the tabloid newspapers fronting those waiting in the supermarket checkout lines: Man Bites Dog, Elvis Presley is Alive Again, Alien Beings Control Vegas Nightlife, etc.
Despite its fantastic headline, the article is actually worth reading. It describes another endangered species which, similar to the clams in yesterday’s post, may very well by its nature (placid), evolve into extinction.
Yet one has to carefully read this quote from the near the end of the article to avoid the wrong conclusions, perhaps even unfounded cackles: “Rikki Gumbs, co-ordinator of Edge reptiles, said: “Reptiles often receive the short end of the stick in conservation terms..”
When it comes to the Mary River turtle, subject of the article, there is no stick involved.
